talked with Heidi about breastfeeding, as she mentioned that baby Daisy had been sleeping amazingly, like for 9 hours. I educated her on how often a newborn needs to eat, and as to why and I explained some ways to get daisy to wake up and to try and keep her awake for a feeding at the breast. Heidi also showed me a rash that daisy had and asked questions about it and I told her she could contact her pediatrician, allow it was most likely just a common newborn rash but better to be safe. we talked about how she is feeling emotionally and physically.

Birth Summary

I was contacted by Rosalyn about coming for a instadoula birth for Heidi, when was admitted at corvallis hospital and in the process of an induction. It looked like things were going slowly, so I took my time getting a shower in and stopping for lunch on my way to the hospital, but as I was leaving Albany Rosalyn messaged saying that the midwife let her know that things were rapidly changing and Heidi was already 9 centimeters so to rush to the hospital. Heidi went from 3 to 9 centimeters in a little over an hour. I arrived at labor and delivery at 1:15pm, and baby was born right as I got into the room. Heidi didn’t use any pain medication, but did use nitrous oxide during transition and delivery and found it very helpful. Baby daisy weighed 9 lbs 7 oz. and was very healthy. Heidi did need a few stitches in multiple places, so the midwife gave her local anesthetic and I let her know she could still use the nitrous during the repairs, so she took great big breaths with the mask on during the repairs and did amazing! Heidi wants to breastfeed baby, so I helped her get daisy latched on and Daisy was a natural! She took to feeding right away and nursed for over 30 mins the first time. Heidi was feeling really good and I helped her get up to the bathroom after the first hour. I continued to talk with Heidi, and her boyfriend and helped her get Daisy latched on after we got her all dressed and ready to move to her recovery room. I packed all of their belongings and got it on the cart. Before I left, I explained how Heidi can have PostPartum visits from me as part of the community doula Program, and she was happy to hear that. I told her I would text her tomorrow to check in and see how her and Daisy were doing and she was happy to hear that as well. I left at 3:45 and Heidi and Baby were doing well and sitting in the wheelchair to head to the recovery room.
